Before you take the leap into your travel nursing career, ensure you have the following covered:

Education:

  • Degree: A registered nursing degree from an accredited program. While not mandatory, a Bachelor of Nursing degree increases your options.
  • Licensure: Pass the NCLEX exam to qualify for state RN licenses. If you live in a compact nursing state, your state RN license will be a compact state license providing increased flexibility in work locations.

Experience:

Most healthcare employers expect one to two years of recent experience in the specialty and setting where you’d like to be placed. Specialized positions may have varied requirements, so discuss your experience details with your recruiter.

Certifications:

  • Essential certifications include the American Heart Association's BLS. The ACLS and other specialized certifications, such as PALS for pediatric units, may be required based on your chosen specialty.
  • Advanced certifications increase job opportunities and offer higher pay.
  • You must be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • List of required, recommended and suggested certifications for each travel nursing specialty.
