American Traveler is hiring an experienced ICU RN for a critical care position requiring 2+ years of ICU experience and proficiency in advanced hemodynamic and critical care skills.

Details

• Acute care setting within a Critical Care service line comprised of CVICU (12 beds), COVID unit (8 beds), MS ICU (8 beds), and PCU (16-20 beds)
• Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:1-2 in ICU based on acuity and staffing, and 1:3-4 in PCU
• Cares for complex critical care patients including COVID (manual proning), neuro, EVD, DKA, sepsis, ARF, CRRT, post-MI, cardiac surgical, STEMI, PCI, CEA, IABP, and post-surgical open heart patients
• Utilizes Cerner EMR
• 12-hour night shifts on a 7-7 schedule, with self-scheduling input finalized by management 4 weeks in advance
• Every other weekend requirement, with 4 weekend shifts per pay period
• RNs titrate critical care drips including pressors, sedation, antiarrhythmics, and anticoagulants
• Charge nurses typically do not take patient assignments except as a last resort, and respond to rapid response and code blue calls
• 24/7 in-house intensivist coverage with NP supplementation
• RT covers all areas but is not dedicated to ICU 24/7
• RNs are responsible for reading their own telemetry strips using Nihon Kohden monitors
• Float rotation required alongside core staff, potentially to PCU, MST, or EC ICU/PCU
• Low-census call may occur approximately once every 6 weeks
• First traveler assigned to float when needed

Requirements

• Active AZ or Compact RN license required, pending licenses not accepted
• BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required
• Strong EKG interpretation and ABG analysis skills required
• Experience weaning and troubleshooting ventilators required
• IABP and Prismaflex CRRT experience preferred
• Must be able to competently manage EVD, chest tubes, arterial lines, and Swan-Ganz catheters
• Open heart surgery experience required to accept fresh post-op cardiac patients
• Must pass a dysrhythmia exam (80% or higher) within two attempts prior to contract signing
• Must pass a sterile technique test for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes during first day of orientation
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including employment dates and rehire eligibility
• Copy of driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

• Provide direct critical care nursing across ICU and PCU areas, including hemodynamic monitoring, drip titration, and ventilator management
• Assist with rapid response and code blue events as part of the care team
• Orientation includes 8 hours of general hospital orientation, one 12-hour shift with a preceptor, and a second 12-hour shift with a buddy for support
• Additional orientation and skills checkoff required for specialized procedures such as open heart surgery or CRRT
• Any color professional scrub permitted, camo scrubs not allowed; unit transitioning to navy scrubs in October
• Holiday coverage required for one winter holiday and the eve of another, though not all holidays are required
• Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
• Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
• Candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will still be considered
• Auto-offer available for candidates with RTO under 7 days and no holiday requests
• Failure to pass required competency exams may result in a 6-month ineligibility period for CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento facilities
