American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele night shift position requiring at least 2 years of experience with a strong background in general surgery and orthopedics.

Details

• Work setting is a community hospital Med/Surg Tele unit
• Patient population includes adults, geriatric patients, and adolescents (Tanner score >4)
• Surgical specialties covered include complex total joints, cervical and lumbar spine fusions, foot and ankle, head and neck, colorectal, hepatobiliary, urology, and GYN surgeries
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5
• Telemetry monitoring is performed on the unit; RN must be proficient in rhythm interpretation
• Equipment used includes IV, PCA, PCEA, capnography, and wound vac
• Unit utilizes Epic (preferred), HCAHPS, white boards, bedside shift report, Zebra phones, and TigerConnect secure messaging
• Schedule is 3x12-hour night shifts (19:00–07:30)
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday coverage required as scheduled
• Floating required within specialty and to lower-acuity areas as needed; travelers are first to float
• No pre-scheduled on-call shifts required
• Block scheduling and special scheduling requests cannot be accommodated

Requirements

• Active RN license — MD state license or Compact RN license required at time of consideration
• Current certifications required: BLS (AHA only), ACLS (AHA only), and NIHSS
• CPI certification preferred; if required for compliance, only the 'Calm Every Storm' online version is accepted
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• General surgery and orthopedic nursing experience required with strong clinical skills
• First-time travelers considered with a minimum of 1 year of healthcare experience and strong clinical skills
• Experience with telemetry monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation required
• Proficiency with IV therapy, central line care, PCA management, and wound vac required
• Community hospital experience preferred
• Candidate must reside 50+ miles from the facility to be eligible

Additional Information

• Candidate must not have been employed as staff within the health system for at least 12 months prior to starting as a traveler
• Return travelers must have been away from the health system for at least 6 months after completing a prior assignment
• Most units allow a maximum of 7 days of RTO; more than 4 consecutive days off requires an additional week added to the end of the contract
• Travelers are typically allowed one major holiday off during the winter season
• Previous charge nurse experience preferred
• Experience working in more than one healthcare facility is preferred, though not required
