American Traveler is seeking an experienced Psychiatric RN for a 13-week travel contract at a Level II trauma hospital in Bismarck, ND, working day shifts every other weekend in the only child/adolescent inpatient psych unit in the region.

Details

• Acute care psychiatric unit in a Level II trauma hospital setting
• 25 licensed beds; currently utilizing 3 adult beds and 6 adolescent beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are 3:1 for adults (up to 7 patients possible) and 6:1 for adolescents
• Patient population includes both adults and adolescents; travelers may work with both populations across shifts (separated by a door)
• Common diagnoses include depression, anxiety, substance abuse (ETOH and other substances), psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other behavioral and personality disorders, and rare opioid withdrawal; all patients are medically cleared
• IV access is rare on this unit
• Mechanical restraints and seclusion are used, though rarely
• Mental health techs/aides are available when the unit reaches capacity; occupational therapy (M–F), OT assistant, and social work are also part of the care team
• Respiratory therapy is available in-house, including CPAP/BiPAP at night and some oxygen support
• No telemetry monitoring on this unit
• Charting is done in Epic
• 12-hour shifts; schedule includes both day (7a–7p) and night (7p–7a) options as well as 8-hour shifts (7a–3p, 3p–11p, 11p–7a); self-scheduling based on seniority with manager balancing
• This is a day shift position
• Every other weekend required
• Every other holiday required
• No on-call or standby requirement
• Travelers are first to float throughout the hospital as helping hands or 1:1s
• Block scheduling is accommodated when possible

Requirements

• Active ND or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses are not accepted
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• Acute/inpatient or state psychiatric hospital experience required
• Current BLS certification required; CPI certification preferred
• Strong de-escalation and communication skills required
• Valid driver's license required
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
• Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility

Additional Information

• The only child and adolescent inpatient psychiatric unit in the region — a locked unit located on the 4th floor of the hospital
• Nurses are expected to be actively involved in patient care, including 15-minute rounds, rather than remaining at the nurses' station
• Unit is equipped with emergency buttons, in-hospital security, code yellow for extra staff support, and a life safety desk
• Adolescent experience is preferred but not required
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Charge nurse or house supervisor is not always present; travelers are not typically expected to fill charge roles
• 2 orientation shifts (12 hours each) provided
• Scrubs may be any color except maroon; business casual attire is also acceptable
• RTO requests (7 days or fewer per 13-week contract) must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved
• Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity Health, within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
