American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Neurology unit at a Magnet-designated, Level III Trauma Center in Milwaukee, WI, requiring at least 1 year of Med/Surg experience and BLS/NIHSS certifications.

• Work in a 24-bed Med/Surg Neurology unit (4KLM) at a 933-bed, Level III Trauma Center with Magnet Designation and Comprehensive Stroke Center status in Milwaukee, WI
• Patient population includes neurological cases (craniectomies, strokes, TIAs, seizures, dizziness, syncope, dementia), spinal surgery patients (anterior/posterior/lateral fusions, discectomy), and general medical overflow (wounds, chest pain, COVID, sepsis, PNA, COPD, CHF, GIB, cellulitis)
• Day shift RN ratios up to 1:5 (ideally 1:3–4); night shift RN ratios 1:6–8
• Tech support available with day ratios of 1:4–5 and night ratios of 1:6–8
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with a tele tech on unit; RNs must sign rhythm strips — if unfamiliar with telemetry, the charge RN will cover this responsibility
• No ventilator management required
• Charting via Epic (preferred); equipment includes Alaris pumps, Pyxis, and GE monitors
• 13-week contract with 36 hours per week on 12-hour night shifts (1900–0730)
• Every-other-weekend rotation required
• One holiday required per contract
• No on-call responsibilities
• Travelers float first to MSU, Tele, COVID, MS Overflow, and ED Holding (MST patients at 1:4 ratio)
• 6-week schedule distributed 1–2 weeks in advance; no self-scheduling

Requirements

• Active WI RN license or a Compact RN license currently in hand
• Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg experience in a core specialty area, with most recent experience within the last year
• Required skills: basic Med/Surg competencies, wound care, wound vacs, neuro checks, trach management (T-mist mask), incision care, drain/tube management, BiPap, HFNC, and post-surgical recovery (especially spinal)
• Preferred skills: chest tubes, lumbar drains, IV skills, and cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Epic EMR experience preferred
• Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
• Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

• Orientation consists of 1 full shift: approximately 4 hours of facility new employee orientation followed by approximately 8 hours of unit training with a preceptor
• Unit culture is team-oriented and supportive, with staff ranging from new grads to those with 5+ years of experience
• Per facility fatigue policy, staff including travelers may not work more than 60 hours in a week or more than 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
• Pain assessment documentation is required before and after medication administration (1-hour reassessment for oral medications); pain scores must align with the appropriate medication order tier
• RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; additional days require manager approval
• Any color scrubs are acceptable; camouflage, denim, and hoodies are not permitted
• Free parking is available; night shift parking is located at on-site hospital lots, with day shift parking approximately 1 block away
• 24/7 security escort to and from parking is available, along with shuttle services during winter months
