American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level II Trauma facility in Illinois, requiring EPIC experience and a minimum of 2 years of surgical nursing experience.

• Inpatient Med/Surg Telemetry unit on the 3rd floor of an acute care hospital (Level II Trauma)
• 48-bed unit spread across two buildings
• Patient population includes post-surgical cases such as laminectomy, cervical fusion, ostomies, hernia repair, total hip and knee replacements, fem pop bypass, BKA/AKA, dialysis catheter insertions, and patients requiring TPN, lipids, PICC lines, PCA, epidurals, IV antibiotics, chronic pain management, and sepsis management
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-6 on days and 1:5-6 on nights; LPNs available on unit
• Virtual admission and discharge nurses available to assist; primary care nursing model is frequently used
• RNs are required to interpret their own telemetry strips; monitor tech is also present (Draeger monitors)
• Heparin drips titrated per protocol
• Dialysis unit is also located on the 3rd floor
• RT manages CPAP (home unit), Airvo, and BiPAP equipment
• 12-hour night shifts starting at 7 PM, three shifts per week
• Schedules are released 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling is not guaranteed
• Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday)
• Included in the holiday rotation with core staff
• No on-call or standby requirement
• Float to like units only; if floated to a higher acuity unit, RN would function in a help-all capacity without a patient assignment
• EMR: Epic (experience required — facility is undergoing an Epic conversion in Q2 2026)
• Local candidates are accepted for this position

Requirements

• Active Illinois (IL) RN license required
• Current certifications required: BLS (AHA) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• Surgical nursing experience required
• Total joint replacement experience required
• Proficiency with PCA pumps, reversal agents (e.g., Narcan), and sepsis management protocols
• Experience with TPN and lipid administration
• Epic EMR experience required

Additional Information

• Fast-paced unit that can receive 8–12 surgical admissions per day in addition to concurrent patient discharges
• Charge nurse is typically a staff nurse on days; nights may be covered by the house supervisor — charge nurses take a smaller assignment to remain available for support
• CNAs are available on the unit, though they may be pulled to serve as sitters; CNA presence is greater on night shift
• Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift on the hired shift and unit; the first day runs 12–14 hours to complete competencies, computer-based modules, and general orientation
• Black scrubs required
• Candidates must be comfortable working in a primary care nursing model
