American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Pediatric Oncology/Hematology position at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital, requiring strong Oncology/Hematology experience and BMT background.

Details

• Works on a 24-bed Pediatric Oncology/Hematology unit, comprising 16 Hematology/Oncology beds and 8 Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) beds, with an average daily census of 22
• All RNs work interchangeably across all 24 beds, including the BMT positive pressure environment
• Patient population spans neonates through adults, including solid tumor cancers, leukemia, sickle cell, aplastic anemia, and highly acute BMT patients (Day 0–2 post-transplant)
• Unit also serves pediatric behavioral health patients including behavioral/adjustment disorders, suicidal ideation, elopement, and human trafficking cases
• Off-service (non-Hem/Onc) patients may be admitted if they have no communicable infections or precautions, due to the neutropenic patient population
• RN patient ratios: Hem/Onc 1:3, Observation/Off-Service 1:3–4, BMT 1:1–2 (acuity dependent)
• 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week
• Every other weekend rotation required; modified self-scheduling with no guarantee of time-off requests
• Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
• Floating may be required to general pediatric medical units (Ortho/Trauma, Gen Peds, Observation, ED Holds) based on skillset and census; no floating to Main ER, PICU, or NICU
• EMR: Epic; IV Pumps: Alaris; Med Dispensing: Omnicell
• Facility is a 247-licensed-bed Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, teaching hospital, and certified stroke center
• No on-call or call-back requirements

Requirements

• Active NC or compact RN license required
• Current BLS and PALS certifications required
• APHON provider card required (note: CPHON and BMTCN are not required)
• Minimum 2 years of pediatric nursing experience with strong Oncology/Hematology background required
• Most recent experience must be within the past year
• Port access experience, chemotherapy administration, and blood product transfusion skills are required
• Proficiency with blood cultures, central line care, PCA pumps, and Heparin drips required
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation required
• BMT experience (Day 0–2) is highly preferred
• Candidate's permanent address must be at least 50 miles from the facility; local candidates are not accepted
• One professional reference dated within the past year is required, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
• Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Additional Information

• Nurses care for highly acute patients throughout active treatment phases; patients who do not require intubation remain on this unit rather than transferring to the PICU
• Behavioral health pediatric patients are common on this unit; cameras are present in care areas and a Psych Tech is available each shift for escalations — candidates uncomfortable with this population should request manager approval before applying
• Support staff includes a free-floating Charge RN/Supervisor, Unit Educator (days), Task RN (10:00 AM–10:30 PM), Unit Secretary (until 9:30 PM), HCTs, IV/VAT team, Phlebotomy, RT (24/7 in-house), and Security (24/7)
• PICU consult team is available for complex drips (e.g., Ketamine); an APP is on-site during days with a provider on call overnight
• Preferred experience includes BMT Day 0–2, end-of-life care, and familiarity with Precedex drips, intranasal Versed, Ketamine drips, and chest tubes
• Orientation includes facility-wide NEO followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
• Required scrub color is navy blue; parking is complimentary
• A team-player attitude and ability to take initiative are essential to success in this department
• First-time travelers will be considered if they have strong BMT RN experience
• Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
