Description

American Traveler is seeking a Med/Surg RN for a Level II Trauma Center, requiring BLS and NIHSS certifications and at least 18 months of MedSurg or ICU experience.

Details

• Hospital setting with multiple specialized Med/Surg units including trauma surgical, neuro, oncology, clinical decision, orthopedics, and urology
• Units care for a variety of patients including general surgical, trauma, neuro, orthopedic, oncology, and urology cases
• Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on the unit and acuity
• 12-hour day shifts (7:00 am-7:00 pm) on a four-week scheduling cycle
• Weekend rotation required: every other weekend or four weekend days per month
• No on-call responsibilities
• Uses Cerner EMR (preferred), Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell for medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
• Floating required to like units and similar patient populations
• Telemetry monitored by dedicated techs, with RNs required to interpret strips every 4 hours

Requirements

• Active AL or compact RN license required
• Minimum 18 months of recent MedSurg and/or ICU experience
• BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required
• Cerner or Epic experience required; Cerner is required if experience is strictly ICU
• At least 1 year of trauma or surgical experience for trauma/surgical units
• Telemetry interpretation experience preferred
• Perm staff must be gone for at least 6 months before returning as a traveler

Additional Information

• Typical responsibilities include wound care, chest tube management, NG tubes, medication administration, IV starts, and documentation
• Specific unit skills may include trach care, colostomy/ostomy care, C-collar management, post-op care, blood draws from central lines, and chemo administration if certified
• Support staff include CNAs, phlebotomists, an IV/VAT team, a charge nurse, and receptionist/HUC
• First-time travelers are welcome
• Orientation includes 24 hours classroom and up to 24 hours on the unit for new or returning travelers gone 1+ years
• Floating is generally limited to similar MedSurg and ICU environments
• Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor holiday per policy
• RTO is not approved for certain blackout dates; up to 7 days off approved outside blackout periods
• No local candidates allowed within a 60-mile radius
