Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a new high-acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position, requiring strong cardiac experience and an active NC or compact RN license.

Details

• Work in a new, high-acuity PCU within a hospital setting at an academic Level 1 Trauma Center
• Cares for cardiac and cardiothoracic surgical patients including CHF, cardiomyopathy, shock, STEMI/NSTEMI, post-pacemaker, post-CABG, heart transplant, and post-vascular surgical cases
• Initial unit size is 10-12 beds, with plans to transition to ICU by the end of 2026
• Patient ratios are 1:3-4 in PCU; once transitioned to ICU, ratios will be 1:2-3
• Uses EPIC EMR, Alaris IV pumps, and Omnicell med dispensing systems
• Shifts are 12 hours (0630-1900 or 1830-0700) with every other weekend required
• No on-call requirements
• Float to other cardiac and medical units within scope and may rotate with other travelers
• 50% holiday coverage required during contract

Requirements

• Active NC or compact RN license
• Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
• Minimum of 2 years ICU or PCU experience (CVICU preferred); from late September 2026, 2 years ICU-specific experience required
• Proficiency with advanced cardiac care, including Swanz and Impella devices, defibrillation, EKG interpretation, post-cardiac and vascular surgery care, and all cardiac drips
• Wound care and dressing change experience is required
• Must be able to care for vented patients and fresh open hearts once unit transitions to ICU
• Experience with LVAD and post-cardiac transplant care is highly preferred but can be trained on site
• First-time travelers are accepted

Additional Information

• Provide care to complex cardiac and surgical patients with a focus on advanced cardiac procedures and post-operative management
• Strong multidisciplinary team support including CNA, charge nurse, managers, phlebotomy, PICC team, respiratory therapists, hospitalists, intensivists, and resident physicians
• Remote telemetry technicians monitor patients and contact RNs directly for issues
• Self-scheduling is available, with permanent staff scheduling prior to travelers
• Two shifts of unit orientation provided
• Royal blue scrubs are required
• Free parking on site
• Manager approval required for all time off requests
