Travel RN Takes her Tiny Home Around the Nation
The travel nurse lifestyle offers the ability to live many different ways, this RN takes her home with her.
Brittany R. is a critical care nurse who is exploring the United States while exercising her passion for nursing. She
pulls her home behind her as she travels, which gives her great flexibility with locations and allows her to focus on
her goals of paying off bills and building savings while exploring the U.S!
When asked why she decided on a travel nurse career, Brittany shared:
“I’ve always had this desire to explore new places and meet new people. I went on a trip to Guatemala, and when I got
back, I knew it was time to start my journey as a travel nurse.”
Originally from Texas, Brittany has already completed assignments in her home state and in North Carolina. She is
currently on assignment in Kingman, Arizona, which she picked for its central location. Kingman is within six hours of
Los Angeles and San Diego – which she just visited over the weekend – and within just a couple hours of Las Vegas. There
are also plenty of outdoor adventures to be had nearby, including exploring the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Joshua Tree
Park – Brittany says she can’t wait for it to warm up!
Brittany has also fallen in love with her unit and with the town of Kingman.
“The ICU I am currently working in is great,” she says, “It was easy to learn the computer system and flow of the
unit, and the staff welcomed me right away. I have also already met some incredible people in this town who I enjoy
hanging out with on my days off.”
She is grateful for her recruiter, Monic O., who is also the reason Brittany chose American Traveler. A coworker’s
friend referred Brittany to Monic. Brittany says Monic is hard-working, understanding, and great at getting her to the
locations she wants!
Brittany originally wanted to become a nurse because she had always had the desire to help others. When her father
passed away during her freshman year of college, she questioned her ability to deal with death and loss and considered
another path – but she concluded that nursing is what she was meant to do. She loves working in the ICU because she
feels she has more time with her patients, enjoys the teamwork and camaraderie, and appreciates the mental challenges
that come with the intensity of the ICU.
We love Brittany’s advice for other healthcare professionals considering travel. Here’s what she has to say:
- Do your homework before you start traveling. Check out blogs, Facebook pages, and talk to travelers so that you know
what to expect and can prepare accordingly.
- Be flexible – especially with compliance, which is the worst, but only happens at the beginning of each assignment.
- Have a game plan for the places you want to see and explore.
- Always find another traveler – preferably during orientation – who is like-minded and wants to do the same things as
you. Brittany says she had made incredible friends on each assignment by being intentional about this.
Her last piece of advice?
“Simplify your life. Less is more. You will be surprised by how many amenities you don’t need. Remember your life has
to fit into your vehicle. Or you can just pull your home behind you like I do!”
