According to a recent survey, only 6% of U.S. hospitals are prepared to receive a patient with the Ebola virus. Conversely, only 5% of hospitals said that they were not prepared at all with the majority indicating they were somewhat prepared. The survey of 1,039 healthcare providers was conducted by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) between October 10th and the 15th, 2014. As a result of the survey, APIC recommends for hospitals and their nursing staff prepare for infectious disease outbreaks with new staff training, personnel and equipment. Hospital Infection Control not a Priority While infection control is important for most hospitals, it has not been priority for some. More than half of the hospitals surveyed (51%) has one or fewer full-time infection preventionists. Only 4% of these hospitals felt prepared to treat a patient with the Ebola virus. That number rises to 31% with hospitals that employ 11 or more infection preventionists.
