Traveler Code of Conduct – Ethical Aspects of Health Care

Good ethics have been described as beginning where the law ends. Legal and medical ethics share the goal of creating and maintaining the social good and have an obligation to safeguard the community. American Traveler is committed to the principles of medical ethics and supports our travelers in the practice of ethical healthcare.

American Traveler Guidelines:

  • Deliver health care in a compassionate, respectful and ethical manner without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender or disability.
  • Treat patients with dignity and respect at all times
  • Provide each patient with information regarding their rights and responsibilities, endeavoring to protect those rights throughout their care and treatment.
  • Provide patients with understandable explanations of services rendered.
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Be guided by the basic principles of honesty and fairness.
  • Respect each patient's right to impartial access to all medical care, treatment or accommodations that are available and medically indicated.
  • Respect the patient's right to receive medical or obstetrical screening examinations to determine if an emergency medical condition exists: and provide additional care or treatment to stabilize the condition, within the capacities of the staff and facility.

Guidelines to follow in questionable situations:

  • Bring the issue to the attention of your supervisor. If you are not comfortable with this, see Human Resources, or contact a corporate compliance officer.
  • If these options are not available – contact the facility's ethics or compliance hot line
  • If this is not available to you, call the American Traveler 24 hour emergency line

Personal Guidelines:

  • Am I following the law?
  • Am I treating others as I would like to be treated?
  • Am I setting a good example?
  • Will I feel good about my actions tomorrow?
  • Would I feel comfortable with my actions if they were on the evening news?
