An Exclusive Travel Nurse Interview It was our pleasure this summer to catch up with Rhonda Ward, R.N., who is enjoying a travel nurse job in Juneau, Alaska right now. A registered nurse for over 20 years and currently working in Endoscopy, Rhonda opened up about the travel nurse lifestyle, and why it’s so special. AT: Is this trip to Alaska your first travel nurse assignment? RW: No, this Alaska travel nurse job is my second, but my first with American Traveler. I’m really liking it so far and would love to extend, maybe work in a Hawaii nursing job next. I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of the Pacific Northwest this summer, and that’s why I wouldn’t mind staying.

AT: Can you tell us about any day-trips or short vacations you’ve been able to do while on assignment? RW: Actually, Seattle’s not too far, so I accepted an invitation to meet up with Jennie Rayner over the 4th of July weekend. AT: Hmmm…Jennie Rayner. That name sounds familiar! Wait a minute! She’s one of our travel nurse recruiters. Are you two friends? RW: Yes, we are! Jennie’s my recruiter, and I got to [+]

National Nurses Week, beginning May 6th and celebrated through May 12th on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, is a long celebrated tradition, wherein all of us—from healthcare professionals to patients and their families—take the time to stop and show our hard working R.N.s our due appreciation. Throughout that week, nurses of every stripe are honored, from those still in training and recognized on May 8, National Student Nurses Day, to travel nurses and their R.N. colleagues who take the spotlight on International Nurses Day, May 12th. For generations, The American Nurses Association (ANA) has supported and encouraged recognition programs for Nurses Week that embody Florence Nightingale’s pledge; in honor of the travel nurses on staff at American Traveler, we would like to expound on Florence’s words and commend our R.N.s for practicing their profession so faithfully and elevating its standards. Whether they work in hospitals, clinics or rehab facilities, R.N.s in our travel nurse jobs are devoted to the welfare of patients who rely on them nationwide. Let's Get Visible: Ideas for Celebrating National Nurses Week Thanks to ANA and word of mouth, registered nurses, colleagues, friends and patients know just how to celebrate National [+]

In some ways, Mother's Day and the nursing profession make a great team. Many specialties (L&D nurse, NICU, Mother/Baby, Peds nurse) focus on mothers and children, so working with moms is a big part of the job. But let's not forget that many RN's  -- in addition to having their own kids --  may also have mothers who were very influential in their choice of a nursing career. Deb before Travel Nursing Job Deb in Nursing School Deborah Bacurin, Clinical Coordinator and Corporate Resource Manager at American Traveler -- and also a RN who worked in the ER for many years -- shares how her mother helped shape her career and life: "I hadn't always planned to be a nurse. When I graduated from high school, my mom was just graduating from nursing school. At 18, the last thing I wanted was to be “just like my mother.” Guess some of the medical profession did rub off on me though;  I got a job as a secretary in a local emergency room.  One day I saw one of the doctors come out and tell family members that their loved one had died.  I decided I could do better than [+]

American Traveler has the utmost appreciation and regard for its nationwide workforce; recently, we honored our Sunshine State travel nurses with a Florida Spring Traveler Appreciation Party. It was a special evening for our travel nurse agency, because it allowed us to thank both our working professionals in Florida nursing jobs, as well as members of our corporate staff. Camaraderie hung in the Spring air, thanks to our mix of impressive professionals, ranging from R.N.s new to travel nursing and on a first assignment, to Travelers logging ten years and counting with the company. More fun ensued when guests flirted with the chance to win an iPad2 for referring a qualified friend. Vice President of Company Recruitment, Mary Kay Hull, was impressed by the high morale at the March party, which put "a [+]

One of American Traveler's Recruiters, Sara Zamora, just had to share this romantic story that a travel nurse sent her on Valentine's day. Jenna S., who is on a Wisconsin nursing job, reports that it has been an unforgettable assignment -- for several reasons! Jenna writes: "I have always wanted a white Christmas because we don't get those very much around Tennessee, where I'm from. On Christmas morning here in Wisconsin, it was so beautiful outside. There was snow on the ground, and some of the biggest snowflakes I've ever seen were coming down. My boyfriend and I decided to take a drive to visit a harbor near the hospital where I'm working. We had a great view overlooking Lake Michigan. I was standing on the pier, in awe of the scenery. When I turned around to get my boyfriend's attention, he was down on one knee. He asked me to marry him and told me that I would make him the happiest man alive if I accepted. He said that he couldn't imagine another day without me. He'd been in a serious car accident a few months earlier and neither of us wanted to be apart like that -- ever [+]

travel nurse Valentines Penny Krause, R.N. has fallen in love twice; first with her husband, and now with her travel nursing job! Her current assignment is in the southeastern part of the Wisconsin and close enough to Chicago that she can’t resist traveling there every chance she gets. Thanks to the flexibility of travel nursing jobs, Penny is in the Windy City quite a bit, and kind enough to share stories with us, of how she’s making the most of her travel nursing career, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Year Round Travel Nursing Fun! Penny and her husband spent New Year’s Eve on Chicago’s Navy Pier, watching a fantastic fireworks display. The pier is a place, says Penny, that is absolutely beautiful at Christmastime, especially with its indoor skating rink—and Chicago—is known for their deep dish pizzas, ethnic eateries, galleries and nightlife. And, Penny tells us, they are also looking forward to this summer when they can attend a Cubs game in the famous Wrigley Field. For Penny, it’s just a 20 minute drive or short trip on the Metro from her Wisconsin travel nursing job to reach Chicago, and once she’s there, a mere $18 [+]
