Job Description:

The Mother and Baby Registered Nurse takes over care of the patient, once Labor and Delivery nurses release the newborn and mom into their care after giving birth or post-partum. In fact, many hospitals refer to the Mother and Baby unit as the PP (post partum) or Family-Centered Maternity Care. Mother and Baby travel nursing involves the care of mom-baby couplets, teaching new parents to care for themselves and their newborns, breastfeeding assistance and monitoring Mother and Baby's wellbeing while still in the hospital. The Mother and Baby Registered Nurse is also responsible for disseminating invaluable resources for teaching, learning, and any special needs, once Mother and Baby are released. Some hospitals have Mother and Baby wards wherein travel nurses are cross-trained as Labor and Delivery nurses; this circumstance is beneficial to R.N.s who wish to learn all aspects of pregnancy care. A love of learning is helpful.
